Job Description for Head Start/Early Head Start

 Bi-Lingual Instructional Assistant

 

QUALIFICATIONS:             Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and some experience in working with children in an organized setting.  Fluent in Spanish is preferred

 

REPORTS TO:                    Teacher & Program Coordinator

 

JOB GOAL:                          The teacher’s assistant will assist the teacher in classroom activities, assume teacher’s responsibility in the absence of the teacher, monitor on the preschool buses, and promote productive relationships with parents.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Participate as      member of an instructional team including remediation teams.

 

  1. Assist in      administering diagnostic and other tests; score and record test      information.

 

  1. Perform routine      clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom      materials; operate copy machines; maintain classroom records; maintain      attendance records.

 

  1. Assist students      by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and      general guidance.

 

  1. Confer, as      needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student      needs.

 

  1. Contact parents      of students who are absent; make home visits as necessary.

 

  1. Assure the      health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and      regulations.

 

  1. Direct group      activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring breakfast, lunch      and playground activities as assigned; assist in emergency drills,      assemblies, play periods and field trips.

 

  1. Supervise      children with personal hygiene such as: brushing teeth, hand washing, and      bathroom.

 

  1. Report Lunch      count and absentees to family advocate.

 

  1. Prepare and      serve snack.

 

  1. Assist with      naptime.

 

  1. Assist in      preparation and clean up after all activities; snack, art, etc.

 

  1. Assumes      responsibility for putting children on buses and act as a bus monitor.

 

  1. Assist in      preparation of materials and space for classroom activities.
  2. Accompanies teacher      on home visits.

 

  1. Attends      workshops and meetings for staff development.

 

  1. Assist with      special needs instruction such as: speech, occupational therapy and      physical therapy.

 

  1. Bi-Lingual      assistant will assist non-English speaking children and families to      increase their communication skills.

 

  1. Make home visits      with Family Service worker to non-English speaking families when needed.

 

  1. Perform related      duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.

 

 

Ability to:

  • Learn child guidance principles and practices.
  • Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and public including members of ethnic communities.
  • Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
  • Print and write legibly.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Learn to apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Monitor, observe and report student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Operate instructional and office equipment.

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Salary and work year to be established by the Carroll County

                                                 Board of Education policy.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the Carroll

                           County Board of Education policy.
